Working with commonplace, cheap or lowbrow subject matter such as bathrooms, logs and dollar-store ephemera, I alter the appearance or character of things in my paintings to elevate their status to the realm of the symbolic or meaningful. I use humor and uneasiness, often in tandem, to draw attention to the situation or subject at hand and to increase narrative tensions. I repeat subjects and visual elements to convey a lack of respective value, while accentuating peculiarities and minor changes that distinguish things from one another, with the dual purpose of making room for tangents in my portrayal of visual matter. I draw parallels between the presentation of subjects in my work, and the act of painting itself as a dance between servant and imposter at the altar of consumerism.
