MP Iqra Khalid's M-103
Dear MP Iqra Khalid, email@example.com
In 1990 I picked up a copy of the Quran.
As an atheist, I found it to be thoroughly threatening.
At that time, I comforted myself with two thoughts:
(1) That just as modern Christians and Jews disobey the very explicit instructions of Deuteronomy 13.6-9, so surely must modern Muslims ignore and disobey the more brutal stuff in the Quran.
(2) That the Muslims were mostly far, far away.
Now, these things have changed.
If there is a "moderate" version of Islam, then the practitioners of "moderate Islam" have it in their power to start solving the problem. I suggest that they begin by rewriting their holy books.
Instead, what we see is a motion [M-103] "for the whole of government approach to ... eliminating ... Islamophobia".
Now think about it. Islamophobia is an excessive fear of Islam --- where
Islam might be either the religion or some group that practices the religion.
Frankly, I see every reason to fear.
And who is it that considers themselves so qualified that they
judge my fears to be excessive?
By my standards of decency, many Muslim nations treat women badly.
Ms Khalid, have you ever feared some group of Muslims?
Is that why you came to Canada?
I'm very much in favour of eliminating "Islamophobia"
but I'm dead set against your motion.
M-103 makes far too many false equivalences.
Islamophobia is fear. You conflate fear with hatred, racism and
That is not helpful.
As I said, "moderate Muslims" have it in their power to differentiate themselves
from the "barbaric Muslims" who follow the Quran as it is written.
All that is required is for "moderate Muslims" to remove
from the Quran all that is nasty and inconsistent with the light of science.
(I say the same about the Bible, especially the
The revised Quran, the "moderate Quran", will have the virtue of being much
lighter on your pocket and much lighter on my mind!
