The first Exercise Handshake was held in December of 2008 and was set up by Jim Hannon, VE1AFH and Jim Langille, VE1JBL of the Westcumb Amateur Radio Club. The main intent is to provide practice for groups involved in EMO activities in the different regions of the Maritimes.

The December exercise included groups from Cumberland Co., Colchester Co., Fredericton, Charlettown and Moncton. The exercise was very successful and so it was decided to continue it on a monthly basis.

New groups are appearing each month and include many different organizations besides amateur radio. Annapolis Co., Kings Co., Lunenburg Co., Queens Co., have now become regular participants along with the original groups. As far as amateur radio is concerned, the different groups attempt to determine how well they can communicate on the different amateur modes such as VHF repeaters, MAVCOM linking system, IRLP linking, EchoLink, HF voice, packet, etc.

On the non amateur radio side, tests are done using the TMR system, satellite phone, FAX messaging, etc. Conducting these exercises on a continuing basis provides an opportunity to become familiar with equipment and to understand what each mode of communication will work for particular situations so that if really needed during an emergency, participants will already be aware of what will work and what will not work.

Any group or area that has not been involved in the Handshake exercises is encouraged to join in on future exercises. You might let Jim, VE1AFH or Jim, VE1JBL know of your interest.
