Poetry

Patrick Conners epitaph, Halifax, Nova Scotia, 1909 ....
When I am dead and in my grave,
Please mark this spot with a marble stave,
So folks will say there he lies,
Poor Pat who made the rods and flies.

And a prayer ....
God grant that I may live,
To fish until my dying day
And when it comes to my last cast
I then most humbly pray,
When in the Lord's safe landing net,
I'm peacefully asleep.
That in his mercy I be judged,
As good enough to keep.

I searched for my soul, my soul I could not see.
I searched for God, but God eluded me.
I searched for a trout and I found all three.

Dogs dream of bones, and fishermen of fish.

Baby goin' fishin' too.

She gonna catch mo' fish than you.

And fish and sit and think,
And think and fish and sit and wish
That you could get a drink.

Come live with me and be my love,
And we will some new pleasures prove
Of golden sands and crystal brooks,
With silken lines, and silver hooks.
John Donne

And still the fair conceit I'd hold
That fishermen never grow old,
That with the daffodil's gold,
That, with the cowslip's plenty,
And with the loud and building rooks
The man of rods and lines and hooks
Is always one-and-twenty.
Patrick R. Chalmers

I want to ask a favour, though -
Ye'll grant it, I'm not doubting -
'Tis 'bout the Twenty-fourth of May,
I want to go a-trouting.
Don Carroll
