Song Writing: A Classroom Approach

Truro music teacher and author, Fred Maybee has recently completed a teaching resource which describes how to write and record a new song as a class project.

Published by Pacific Edge Publishing, Song Writing: A Classroom Approach, follows the process from initial concept through catchy phrases, rhyming, and literary techniques, to copyright and the recording and marketing of the final product - a cassette or CD.

Included in the resource is a CD with  26 of the 125 original songs written by Maybee and the students in his music classes throughout the 1990's.

He explains, “ In each music class, from grade primary to grade six, part of the curriculum was to write a song as a group. Each class brainstorms for a topic and adds associated words that can become their message. After the tune is added and the song is rehearsed, the class may have the option of performing the song at a school assembly. They are soon ready to record it.”

The recording takes place in the music classroom, after all studio details have been discussed and studied by the class. Song Writing: A Classroom Approach takes the reader through all the steps in the recording process from selecting the proper microphone, to using equipment, and teaching the students to be studio technicians.

By selling cassettes to family and friends, Maybee has used these projects as fund raisers in nine elementary schools, but the most significant result of the projects is the song writing experience and the learning that results.

Teachers everywhere will want to find out more about this resource. Details are available through the publisher at http://www.classroomresources.com or by contacting the author at fred@baylite.ca
