Author Antonya Nelson has written a 317 page book
"Living to Tell".
NY Times Book Review reports
it her finest novel to date. She builds the story around a family named Mabie in Wichita.
Professor Mabie, Mrs. and three children. Of
interest to me is a curiosity regarding the reasons for an author to use this
family name. Perhaps someone is acquainted with this
author? Perhaps the author chose the name for reasons we might wish to

Mary Mabie
was born Acadia, Nova Scotia. Her name was originally Marie
Junteau When the Fench
Acadians were driven out by the English in the late 1700's, Mary/Marie was
only 3 years old. She was separated from her parents, and never saw
them again. She was adopted by the Mabie
family of Westchester, NY, and later married Andrew Kiff.Their daughter Elizabeth married William
McIntosh. These are my direct ancesters
through the McIntosh/Cease line. I have always hoped to find the names
of the Mabies who took the little lost French girl
in and gave her their name.

Not absolutely certain of my
lineage. My father and grandfather always said that we were descendant
from a seafaring family in Portsmouth,
England and
that my great,great, etc.,
was a "sea captain".
My grandfather(Henry
Maybee)and his brother (William Maybee)emigrated to Canada in the
late 19th century following the death of their mother and father. They were
in their pre-teens at the time. I understand there were two older sisters
that remained in Portsmouth
but I have not done any research to confirm or deny this
"understanding".
My grandfather (Henry)
married and he and his wife (Hanna) had two sons. My father, Milford, had 3
children, Sharron, myself, and my brother Arden. My father's brother,
Alfred, never married.

For some reason, you do not
seem to recognize that Jan Pieterse
Mabee, son of Pieter Casparszen b. 1654 is the one who moved to
Schenectady. Instead,
you maintain the incorrect lineage that this Jan
used Van Naarden
as a part of his name. While Royal Mabee did
some
wonderful work, he blew this
one completely.

is my cousin Charlie Mabie in Newark CA.

is our official family historian, and has tons of information going back to
the late 1600's in France
if I'm not mistaken. Our branch pre-dates the Revolution in the US
& moved back & forth between the maritime provinces in Canada,
& the upper east coast of the US, Minnesota, Illinois, etc., but Charlie
has the factual data. It would be great to see something in
print.
The
majority of our branch of the family are in the
Southern San Francisco Bay Area (San Jose, San Carlos, Newark) and
the Monterey Bay
area (Aptos, Watsonville, Capitola) in California.
Uncle Carl at 92 is still full of family history--he's in San
Carlos; as is my Uncle Eldon who is 87 and living in Watsonville. My
mother, Joan, at 85 has some dementia and confusion though she still enjoys
the old family stories. I got the three of them together down in the
Bay Area last October and we had a great time listening to Carl's stories.
Charlie Mabie is his grandson, so a lot of his information has
come through Carl.
