Paragraph from "The Pioneer Farmer and Backwoodsman"
by Edwin C. Guillet
"The first white man buried in old Charlotteville,
occurred in the year 1794 on the hill overlooking Turkey Point. The body
buried was that of Frederick Mabee, the old pioneer head of the Mabee family.
He was buried in a walnut log coffin. This rude casket was made as the
old rain troughs were made, and with a tight fitting lid. In after years
when the remains were moved elsewhere, the log coffin was as sound as when
first made and buried."
Frederick Mabee was born
1735 and married Lavina Pelham. Among his several children was Deacon Oliver
Mabee.
