| 8-11-2003 | Total Lunar Eclipse | |
![]() |
Much of eastern North America was treated to a spectacular show during this total eclipse of the Moon. Totality lasted from 23:06 until 23:30 and the Moon had a wonderful orange hue. There's more images on my Moon Images page.
| 30-10-2003 | Major Aurora Storm | |
![]() |
A large sunspot group (Region 486) erupted a class 10 solar flare on Oct 29 which sparked a massive aurora display early in the evening of Oct. 30th (23:45 UTC). The incredibly bright display spanned the sky from the western horizon to the eastern horizon and filled most of the sky overhead for a little over an hour. For more images of this major storm, check my Aurora Storm page.
| 21-9-2003 | Mars opposition of 2003 - Fantastic !!! | |
![]() |
Mars reached opposition in late August and provided the best views in years being closer than it has been to the earth for about 60,000 years. It remains a bright feature of the night sky, outshining all other objects in the sky. Although shrinking and fading as the distance from Earth increases, Mars is still large and bright enough to provide great views in any telescope. Planet watchers are keeping a close eye out for dust storms that have been threatening to obscure surface details as they did in 2001. For the latest images, check my Planet Images page.
| 1-5-2003 | Major Aurora in Nova Scotia | |
![]() |
The Solar Terrestrial Dispatch had issued a mid latitude aurora warning and we were not disappointed. The Earth was entering a solar wind stream flowing from a hole in the Sun's corona creating the high energy conditions for a major geomagnetic storm. Activity was brief, lasting about 45 minutes but was very intense and colourful. For more images, check my Aurora Images page.
