Feb. 27, 2002 Special event hosted by the Atlantic Flute Society
The two-hour masterclass was a great success! There were five participants. Deepti Limaye began with the last movement of the Ibert concerto, followed by Lani Sommers and the first movement of the Martinu sonata. Jennifer Publicover played the first movement of the Prokofiev sonata, Charmaine Chaddock played the Ballade by Martin, and Karin Aurell finished with the opening movement of Roussel's Joueurs de Flûte. Mr. Wilson praised the strong elements in every performance and offered great suggestions and techniques for improvement, many of which he expertly demonstrated himself on his own flute. He was helpful and friendly and instantly won the admiration of everyone present! Ransom Wilson is an internationally respected flutist, conductor, and pedagogue. He has appeared with major orchestras around the globe, and has made 30 recordings as both flutist and conductor. You are urged to visit his website to learn more about him.
Mr. Wilson was in Halifax for the entire week, as he conducted Symphony Nova Scotia in a concert on March 1, and we were lucky to book him on his one day off from rehearsals. He is one of the candidates for the position of Music Director of the symphony orchestra.
Distinguished concert pianist Peter Allen provided solid accompaniment to all participants. Mr. Allen is based both in Halifax and Fredericton, and earns our sincere thanks. We were also joined by Pascal Véraquin of Montréal, woodwind dealer and repair technician, and closest Canadian representative for the flute manufacturer Verne Q. Powell. Mr. Wilson plays exclusively on Powell instruments, and we were fortunate to have Powell partly sponsor our masterclass with him. Participants and auditors alike had the opportunity to visit his booth to try his instruments and to have their own flutes adjusted free of charge. Special thanks also go to the Dartmouth Chapter of the Nova Scotia Registered Music Teachers for providing access to the Alderney Landing Theatre in Dartmouth, to everyone who helped us get settled at the theatre, and also to Beth Du Bois, Sandra Britten, Charmaine Chaddock, Linda Schroeder, and Jaye Marsh.
