Flutist to perform Tangos in VIA Rail stations.

Karin Aurell, flutist and active performer in the region, is about to embark on a new exciting project – she plans to do five performances of Martin Kutnowski's 12 Tango Etudes in three VIA Rail stations in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia between February 28 and March 11. The first performance will take place in Moncton on Monday February 28, followed by two shows in Halifax on March 2 and 3, and the following week by two more; in Moncton on Thursday March 10 and in Miramichi on Friday March 11.

All shows will start approximately one hour before the departure of the westbound train, and the performer is encouraging interested people to show up just to listen, joining the folks who are in the train station for travel. Halifax shows will start at 11 AM, Moncton shows at 4 PM and the Miramichi show will start at 6 PM.

Karin's VIA Rail shows are part of a larger national project titled New Music in New Places, the focus of which is to bring new Canadian music to a new audience by performing it in venues other than regular concert venues. The idea of performing in train stations is one that appeals to the flutist, partly because train stations tend to be good performance venues with good acoustics and exciting things going on, and also because they are places where people who are going from one place to another often end up spending a bit of time. It also evokes the performer's youth, when she spent many hours busking and one of her favourite performance spots was an underground walkway connecting the Stockholm Central Station with that city's subway system.

Karin is a passionate advocate for music written here and now, and has collaborated with many composers in the region since moving here from Sweden in 2001. The present collaboration, with Argentinian-born New Brunswick composer Martin Kutnowski, is a very happy one – Martin's music is exciting to perform and fun to listen to. As Martin himself writes he is “a contemporary composer with firm roots in the tonal idiom. In his works, references to the musical past are often embedded within folk materials of his native country, Argentina”. His compositions and recordings are available on the independent label Contrapunctus, on FJH Publications, Editions Billaudot, and on Ricordi.

Kutnowski received his composer training in Buenos Aires and New York, and currently teaches at Saint Thomas University in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Aurell is a long-time orchestral player who moved here from her native Sweden to pursue a freelance career. She performs regularly with all the orchestras in the region, as well as in chamber and solo concerts. Karin, who loves recording, has two solo cd's to her name, and plans to record Martin's Etudes later this spring.

Karin wishes to thank VIA Rail Canada, the Canadian Music Centre and the SOCAN Foundation for giving her the opportunity to present these five shows.

New Music in New Places is a national Canadian Music Centre project, which puts the focus on new Canadian music by presenting it in new or unusual venues across the country. So far, close to forty events have taken place in venues such as hotels, shopping malls and office buildings, industrial sites, a winery and a prison. The Canadian Music Centre gratefully acknowledges the support of the SOCAN Foundation and the Government of Canada through the Canada Music Fund.

Founded in 1959, the Canadian Music Centre is Canada’s primary place to find scores, parts and recordings of Canadian contemporary music composers. Housing Canada’s largest collection of Canadian classical music works, the CMC exists to promote the works of its Associate Composers in Canada and around the world. The Centre makes available on loans more than 16,000 scores and/or works of Canadian contemporary classical music composers through its library. Visit www.musiccentre.ca

Sackville artists Janet Hammock and Karin Aurell to perform CMC Associate Composer MARTIN KUTNOWSKI’S
“Etudes dans le Style du Tango”

November 17, 2010

On Wednesday November 17 at 8 PM, Karin Aurell, flute, and Janet Hammock, piano, will take to the stage at Brunton Auditorium to perform new tangos by Argentinian-born NB composer MARTIN KUTNOWSKI, along with tantalizing tangos by the master of the art of tango music, Argentinian composer Astor Piazzolla.

The two Sackville artists are among the most active performers in the Maritimes, and both continue to excite their audiences with their new projects and endeavours. Neither one has a previous background in tango playing, and both were introduced to the art through Martin Kutnowski, an Argentinian composer who now lives in Fredericton, where he teaches at St. Thomas University. Martin has had a string of successes internationally, his music has been recorded by major French artists on the Anima label, and his works are heard all over the world. His music is also published by Gerard Billaudot publishing house in Paris. Janet and Karin both received recognition this past year for their dedication to the performance of the works of Canada's composers. On November 9, 2009, during the Canadian Music Centre’s 50th Anniversary Celebrations at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, they were both honoured as two of 50 Ambassadors of Canadian music. These lifetime achievement awards were given to outstanding Canadian performers and conductors who have played exceptional roles in shaping the Canadian music scene and raised the profile of Canadian music.

Janet and Karin will each play a set of Martin's “Etudes dans le Style du Tango”, a set of 5 for solo piano and 12 for solo flute. These etudes are gems in the small format, expressive and rich, exploring the boundaries of the instruments and the style. Along with the solo etudes, Janet and Karin will perform a set of three tango etudes by the master of the Argentinian Tango, Astor Piazzolla. These pieces are absolute masterworks, fiery and expressive, a treat to perform and to listen to. The concert will begin with two small works by French composer Gabriel Faure; Berceuse and Morceau de Concours.

Admission will be by donation and all proceeds will go towards the Sackville Music Festival 2011.

Songs by Fauré, Sains-Saëns, Bizet, and Albert Roussel will alternate with chamber trios by Duruflé and French baroque composer Antoine Dornel. The title of this new work is"Ala ' sutemamk ukjit sankewo ' ti ula uksitqamu", this is Mi ' kmaq and translates to “Prayer for World Peace”. This is very likely the first classical setting of a Mi ' kmaq text – ever! Needless to say, the performers are thrilled to be part of this historic first performance!

He has composed for various ensembles--most recently, a choral work for the New Brunswick Youth Choir performed in Sackville last May. His opera, Baba Yaga, for 12 soloists, chorus, and orchestra, was premiered by the Université de Moncton Opera Workshop last January.

Nathalie Paulin has recently sung in L ' Enfant Prodigue by Debussy with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Yanick Nézet-Séguin. She also starred to much acclaim last season as Manon in the opera Manon by Massenet for the Calgary Opera and Opera Lyra in Ottawa . She was also heard in The Seasons by Haydn with the Calgary Symhony as well as in Mahler ' s 8th Symphony with l ' Orchestre Metropolitain. She currently lives in Toronto were she pursues her singing career as well as teaching french diction at the University of Toronto .

Jean-Christophe MAILLARD and Vortex 3: Folk meets Baroque in 18th century France and Scotland

St. John's Anglican Church, Townsend St., Lunenburg

In this opening program of Boxwood 2010, the lines presumed to exist between folk and art music of the 18th century will be dissolved as Jean-Christophe MAILLARD, the world's greatest exponent of the French baroque musette de cour astounds and amazes. He'll present a program of pastoral music of the French baroque that reaches to the music's roots in the traditional vocal and dance music of Brittany and the Pyrenees. Vortex 3 mixes Cape-Breton, Acadian and Maritime Canadian influences with Scotland's folk-infused music of the 18th century. Their recent performances at the Edinburgh International Festival, Ottawa Chamber Music Festival and Sligo Baroque Festival have left audiences . . . astonished. Music and Songs from the ballad opera:
THE GENTLE SHEPHERD

Venue TBD

Alan Ramsay published The Gentle Shepherd in Edinburgh in 1725 as a pastoral ballad opera. The Gentle Shepherd enjoyed massive success both in his lifetime and for several years after his death. With music compsed by James Oswald this Scots pastoral drama is an entirely original creation, which develops the pastoral genre and fixes it within a Scottish context. Although the play belongs to the sentimental age, its value remains to this day: Ramsay presents his audience with skilful sections of lyric and song, and daringly attempts to revive the Scottish theatrical tradition under the strict codes of Calvinism. David McGuinness presented a reconstruction of the Gentle Shepherd at the Edinburgh International Festival a few years back to rave reviews and sold out houses. Join us for this unique and magical production.

Musique Royale presents

"Let Me In This Ae Night"

Chris Norman, wooden flutes

David Greenberg, violin/fiddle

7:30pm Sat. May 15, 2010
St. John's Anglican Church
Lunenburg, Nova Scotia

for ticket information, visit Musique Royale:

http://www.musiqueroyale.com/events.html

Born in Halifax, NS into a music loving family, Chris Norman's influential work as a performer, composer, recording artist and teacher has done much to bring the simple wooden flute to the forefront as an alternative voice to the modern orchestral instrument and redefined the flute in traditional Canadian & Scottish traditional music. His busy performing schedule includes solo engagements and concerts with a variety of ensembles, appearing frequently as soloist with orchestra and touring with his own Chris Norman Ensemble. In years past Chris has also appeared worldwide as a member of the international folk trio, Helicon, the all-star Celtic fusion group, Skyedance, the acclaimed early music group, The Baltimore Consort and across Europe with Concerto Caledonia

Norman's flute playing can be heard featured on the Oscar winning soundtrack of Titanic, the Hollywood films, Soldier, and the forthcoming Stone of Destiny. His solo CD releases have received unanimous praise from critics and audiences alike and appeared on Billboard's crossover charts. He's presently producing and hosting a program on connections between food & music for Inside the Music broadcast nationally on CBC Radio One in Canada and worldwide on Sirius. Through his work as founder and artistic director of the Boxwood Festivals and Workshops taking place in Canada, New Zealand & Europe, Chris has inspired thousands of musicians of all ages abilities.

David Greenberg's double career as both a baroque violinist and traditional fiddler began at an early age. During his schooling in classical violin playing (beginning at age 4), he also picked up traditional fiddling by ear from recordings.

Originally from Maryland, David studied baroque violin with Stanley Ritchie at Indiana University's Early Music Institute, and moved to Canada in 1988 to join the Toronto-based baroque orchestra Tafelmusik. With Tafelmusik for 10 years, David performed orchestral, chamber, and solo roles in North America, Europe, and the Far East, and on more than forty recordings. David also plays the vielle (medieval fiddle). He won first prize at the Erwin Bodky International Early Music Competition in 1988 with the Medieval Quintet, and he recorded vielle soundtracks for Atom Egoyan's film The Sweet Hereafter.

David has gained the reputation in Cape Breton music circles as being one of the few people from outside the Nova Scotia island to have achieved a fluent command of the Cape Breton music idiom. With his wife, Kate Dunlay, he published a book called Traditional Celtic Violin Music of Cape Breton, The DunGreen Collection (1996) He also recorded the solo celtic-violin music for Pit Pony, a movie about turn-of-the-century Cape Breton. David's long-time collaboration with Cape Breton pianist Doug MacPhee has recently resulted in the recording Tunes Until Dawn (Marquis, 2000). Over the last few summers David has performed and taught at numerous fiddle camps and festivals around North America and Scotland.

In 1994, David founded Puirt a Baroque (pronounced poorsht-a-ba-roke), a group that connects traditional Cape Breton music with its roots in the Baroque era. Puirt a Baroque's best-selling debut recording Bach Meets Cape Breton (Marquis Classics), won the 1997 East Coast Music Award for Best Classical Album. Kinloch's Fantasy: A Curious Collection of Scottish Sonatas and Reels was released later in 1997. Return of the Wanderer followed in 1998 and received a Juno Awards nomination (1999) for Best Roots and Traditional Album (Group). David's Scottish-baroque crossover fiddling can be heard currently in the trio Ferintosh, with cellist Abby Newton and celtic harpist Kim Robertson.

David plays a more eclectic mix of music with Scottish keyboard player extraordinaire, David McGuinness. With Lion, an offshoot of David McGuinness' group Concerto Caledonia, David G recorded Spring Any Day Now - Music of 18th century Scotland and elsewhere, Marquis 81325, 2003. The two Davids have also worked, along with flautist Chris Norman and others, on two Acadian recordings for soprano Suzie LeBlanc: La mer jolie, chants d'Acadie and a forthcoming CD.

David performs regularly with Apollo's Fire (Cleveland's baroque orchestra), the Seattle Baroque Orchestra, BaroQuébec, and the Toronto Consort. Since moving to Halifax in 2000, David has helped to found Tempest baroque ensemble which he directs, and has collaborated with Maritime-Canadian artists including highland piper Ian McKinnon, guitarist/arranger/conductor Scott Macmillan, Symphony Nova Scotia, and harpsichordist Gordon Murray.

Released February 10th 2010, Chris Norman and David's Duo CD, Let Me In This Ae Night.
