BOXWOOD CANADA 2011

July 24 - July 30, 2011
Lunenburg , Nova Scotia

Join us in beautiful Lunenburg , Nova Scotia to discover music, ballad & dance traditions amid one of North America ' s most exquisite 18th century seaside towns. Boxwood presents a full range of classes with world renowned experts in the realms of traditional folk, early music & dance. The flute is center stage along with many other instruments, voice, and the rhythm of dance in concerts, dances, sessions, classes, lectures with gourmet cuisine in the heart of Nova Scotia ' s beautiful South Shore inspiring the creative spirit of every participant. The Boxwood experience brings together kindred spirits from all over the world creating lasting friendships, nourishing music, and soulful fun in a unique festival and workshop program that is completely non-competetive.

Boxwood has received worldwide recognition for 16 years of producing extraordinary and unique gatherings whose aim is the exploration and sharing of the oral traditions of music making. Boxwood’s invited guest artists change from year to year to include leading players, teachers, makers, historians and scholars from among many musical traditions - artists who seek a broad context and canvas for their work. Students attend classes daily and are encouraged to visit with each teacher during the course of the week with the aim of discovering connections between oral traditions, expanding musical vocabulary, learning new techniques, broadening their sense of the instrument, and enabling them to find their own musical voice. The evenings are filled with social gatherings that include excellent meals, concerts, social dancing, informal gatherings and sessions of music-making with students and teachers alike. While the week in Lunenburg emphasizes the flutes, whistles, pipes, recorders and their musical traditions, the festival encourages a multidisciplinary approach, inviting a variety of artists, students and players of all instruments at all levels – novice and experienced.

Enjoy a week of Scottish piping, fiddle, flute and dance in the 1000 year old walled hill town of Barga in Tuscany surrounded by spectacular mountain scenery and architectural glory. http://www.boxwood.org/aiseirigh_barga.html

BOXWOOD FESTIVAL and WORKSHOP - CANADA 2010: July 25-31, 2010 in beautiful Lunenburg , Nova Scotia . Registration is now OPEN! We ' re looking forward to deepening our understanding of the connections between music & dance with an astounding line-up of artists - I ' m very excited about this year ' s festival! http://www.boxwood.org/canada_register.html

NEW CD RELEASE - LET ME IN THIS AE NIGHT: available in mid-February, orders can now be placed on the Boxwood website. Scottish and baroque music are the main root elements. Eighteenth-century Scottish music in particular cries out for an unusually large and unconventional palette of stylistic interpretations, because its very nature defies classification as either folk or art music. Our duo ' s sound has been honed over decades of collaboration & represents the ultimate in musical transparency and creative urgency. $19 postpaid. Details: http://www.boxwood.org/boxwood-media.html

I hope to see you soon!

Celtic Stylings for Flute Players

Making the leap
and landing on your feet

Jennifer Publicover, instructor

If you have ever been curious to play Irish, Scottish, and other celtic styles on your flute but don’t know where to begin, visit my teaching studio in Dartmouth , NS and take your first steps into a vibrant musical community.

I am available for private individual and group lessons as well as introductory workshops in universities and schools.  I have developed an approach that can be adapted to any level of player, from beginner through professional.  Younger students will also build general flute and music literacy skills, while more experienced players will enjoy a focus on building repertoire; you all will learn ornamentation and style and develop the skills to give your tunes your own personal flair.  Your ears will get a great workout as well!

My private students will have opportunities to play in sessions with others of a similar level with harp or guitar accompaniment.  Chris Norman, international recording artist and director of the Boxwood Festival in Lunenburg, can be available to give us periodic workshops.  I also have academic support from ethnomusicologist, university lecturer and fiddler Kate Dunlay, who is a great source of historical and stylistic information.

I am a freelance flutist, both classical and celtic.  On the classical side, I am hired by such groups as Symphony Nova Scotia , the Charlottetown Festival Orchestra, the Gilbert and Sullivan Society, and other ensembles.  I have a Masters in Flute Performance from the University of Toronto , and I teach classical flute as well.  On the celtic side, I play Irish flute, silver flute, piccolo and bodhrán in two bands: Fancy’s Flight, with Cheryl Reid O’Hagan (harp, voice), Kate Dunlay (fiddle, dance) and Phil Schappert (guitar, cittern, voice); and Papilio, with Colin Jeffrey (fiddle) and Phil Schappert (guitar, cittern, voice).  I am a familiar face in Halifax-area sessions and collaborate with other musicians as well.

You may work on a simple-system Irish flute if you have one, or you may use a modern Boehm flute.  I switch back and forth between both instruments and can teach from either perspective.  Come and join the fun of expressing yourself through these fantastic musical cultures!
