J27 "Nut Case" #150

Bring back to suitable condition

Looking for a replacement after Full Tilt 2 was sold the priority was as good or better performance and cabin room was the sacrifice.  After looking at Kirby 25, Bombardier 7.6, Olson 25 a J27 was located at a suitable price.  This site will chronicle the journey from finding the J27, thru retrofit and sailing.  The J27 offers an exhilarating sailing performance with performance and speed associated with 35 foot yachts in a 27 foot vessel.

During pre-purchase discussions it was plainly stated that the deck had some wet spots around the stanchions and that the cabin floor may need replacement.  Further investigation had revealed that all J27 have or have had wet core issues around stanchions and some other areas.  These boats either require repair in these areas or have had the repairs already completed - one of the major factors affecting resale price.  Having performed some recoring on Full Tilt 2 and on our laser the summer before I welcomed these projects.   This represented a break in the price as well as a satisfying project to put my own stamp on the vessel.  I had also been warned that the boat required a complete bottom job - not structural but time consuming.  What I was not prepared for was the overall grime and condition of a vessel that had been sitting on the hard over the winter.  Cosmetic yes but depressing at the same time.

Most products used in this project were purchased from IMP Marine in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia
