What Is Pickleball?
Pickleball originated in the
U.S. in 1965. The name comes from the inventor's dog, Pickles, who
would chase the balls when they were hit out of bounds. The game is a
racquet sport played on a doubles badminton court outdoors or indoors.
It's a cross between ping pong and tennis. Paddles and a whiffle ball
are used. This is the fastest growing sport in retirement communities
in Florida and Arizona. Pickleball is rapidly catching on in Ontario,
British Columbia and other parts of Canada.
Who Can Play
Pickleball?
Almost anyone can play doubles pickleball. Compared to tennis, it uses
a smaller court and an easy-to-hit larger ball. In one hour a person
can learn the basics of pickleball and actually play the game.
Currently we are concentrating our efforts on recruiting adult and
active senior players.
Is It Expensive to Play?
Absolutely not. Sneakers (preferably court shoes) and gym attire
should be worn. Paddles and balls will be supplied for beginners.
There is no charge to play on community courts. Lessons are FREE for
beginners and there are no fees to join.
What Are The Benefits?
Most players will tell you they play for exercise, fun and social
interaction.
Where and When Can I Play?
Badminton courts at the NEMI Community Centre Curling Rink are used
from May to October. Lines have also been painted on the two tennis
courts beside the Community Centre. Club members play on Monday,
Wednesday and Friday from 10 am to 12 noon. The tennis courts
can be used anytime weather permitting.
