It is with a great deal of appreciation that we extend Thanks to Mr. Lloyd for his contribution to the Lloyd Family Research |
||
| The following is the Prologue for a paper written by Mr. Lloyd in 1998: | ||
| "Some Colonial Descendants of Thomas Lloyd | ||
| Captain and Commander of Charleston Fortifications | ||
| I believe myself to be descended from the Thomas Lloyd who was appointed Commander of Charleston's fortifications 1721. In National Genealogical Society numbering I am Richard8 (George7, George6, George5, Thomas4, Thomas3, Thomas2, Thomas1). Using the numbering I chose for this paper, I am Richard 8.1. | ||
| My father, George A Lloyd, was born in Somerville, MA and worked as a Structural Engineer in Trenton, NJ. My Grandfather, George Henry Lloyd, was born in Liverpool, Queens County, Nova Scotia and was an Optician in Boston, MA. My great Grandfather, George Lloyd, was born in East Sable Rive, Shelburne County, Nova Scotia and was a ship's carpenter. My great, great Grandfather, Thomas Lloyd, who bought 100 acres in East Sable River and supported his family as a fisherman. My great, great, great Grandfather was a Loyalist who departed Charleston, South Carolina in about 1776. | ||
| Little of this Lloyd genealogy was known to my family at the time my father died. We knew his father had been born in Nova Scotia and probably was descended from a Loyalist. My Uncle, Frederick A Lloyd, tried to research the family history in the 1940s, but only managed to collect information about his relatives in Nova Scotia. | ||
| Family genealogy and history became my hobby after my retirement in 1986. I have now researched and written what I learned about my mother's side, the Suydams of New Jersey and the Waymans of Maryland. For the past three or four years I have been researching my father's side, the Lloyds and Hardy of Shelburne County, Nova Scotia. | ||
| In 1993 and 1994 I towed my trailer up to Nova Scotia and spent a total of about five months attacking the files in all the archives, libraries and county offices in Ottawa and relevant parts of Nova Scotia. From these files and interviews with Canadian Lloyds, I was able to collect and organize a good picture of my Canadian ancestry. | ||
| In the Canadian National Archives I found a document which | ||
| verified that my Lloyd line is through a Loyalist, Thomas Lloyd, who departed Charleston, SC, but whose father was a Georgia merchant. In Fall of 1994 and Summer of 1995, my trailer and I went to South Carolina and Georgia where I sought information on my pre-revolution ancestors. It was here that I was able to trace my ancestry back to Thomas the Commander of Charleston Fortifications. Though there are hints that this Thomas came from Wales, I was unable to confirm this. | ||
| The story of the Colonial Lloyds had a serious problem. There were too many Lloyds in Colonial Charleston and they all had a propensity to name sons Thomas, John or Joseph. Based on 1994 research, I created a genealogy which started with Thomas Lloyd, Commander of Charleston Fortifications from 1721 to 1742. | ||
| In 1995 I encountered genealogies which contradicted this. They indicated that I am descended from a Thomas who arrived in about 1735. This Thomas was brother to John of Sharphley who had been living in Charleston since about 1720. This lineage was found in a very official looking document entitled "Biographical Directory of the South Carolina House of Representatives & Commons House of Assembly 1692-1775". It could not be dismissed lightly. Both my Thomas and John of Sharphley had been members of the House of Assembly. A second contradicting genealogy accepted the brothers John and Thomas line and even hinted that the brothers were sons of Sir Edward Lloyd, Baronet. | ||
| I was not willing to give up my "Commander" lineage for a maybe "Sir Edward" lineage. The paper which follows was written on the premise that my North American lineage starts with Thomas1.1 Lloyd, Captain and Commander. In Annex 5 , I have presented a defence of the "Commander" lineage and charts for nine other Lloyd families of colonial South Carolina and Georgia. In the "Defence" and in the index, I have identified these many families by Lloyd [1], Lloyd [2], Lloyd [3] ... etc. Lloyd [1] being the Thomas 1.1 line." | ||

| Mr. Lloyd has also sent his database to be posted on this site for the benefit of others. There are two files, the first being a list of land grants and the second is a database of names relevant to Lloyd family. There are over 1000 names in the database listed in alphabetical order. | ||
