Uechi Ryu Karate Do
Classical Chinese Okinawan Self Defense

A Brief History & Philosophy
The founder of Uechi Ryu Karate was an Okinawan named Kanbun Uechi born May 5th, 1877. He traveled to the Fukien Province in China, and studied the Chinese fighting system Paingai-Noon (kenpo) from Shushiwa at the Central Temple from 1897 to 1910.

Kanbun returned to Okinawa in 1910 and shortly after opened a dojo, and began to teach.
Kanbuns' reputation soon grew throughout Okinawa. Kanbun died in 1948 after passing his art to his son Kanei whom he had taught since 1930. Since 1942 Uechi Ryu has grown faster than any other style in Okinawa, and has since spread throughout the world.
Uechi Ryu is a close combat style incorporating elements from the Tiger, Crane and Dragon. Roughly translated Paingai-Noon means "half-hard half-soft". Uechi Ryu combines well with "grappling styles" such as Juijuitsu. Emphasis is placed on hand and body conditioning.
Uechi Ryu utilizes circular, deflecting blocks, and a number of effective "single strike" techniques, often using open hand techniques and circular blocking motions unlike most traditional Japanese or Okinawan styles.
Uechi Ryu was brought to Boston by George E Mattson in 1950's, and has since grown throughout North America and the world.
