the rhodes to woad
Rhode Scholars are those students studying at Oxford with a Rhode Scholarship.
These studies encompass a wide range of interests and disciplines.
The scholarship was set up by Cecil Rhodes, who was both an explorer and
entrepreneur. Cecil made a huge fortune and an island in the Southern Aegean Sea is named after him.
Centuries before, the island had already been famous as a place of study.
At a time when the Druids held a strong position within their Celtic society,
the most sought after and expensive commodity was a bluish-purple dye
used for personal body colouring.
Historians are uncertain why, but Rhodes became the most prestigious centre for learning
how to grow, harvest and produce the dye from the herb called woad.
The students were of course "Woad Scholars"
