J29 "J-Zeus" Refinishing

Before
The owner of this race boat contacted us concerned about the deteriorating finish on the hull and bottom. He wanted the boat fast and attractive and so we discussed options.

Overall
It was decided to strip current coating from the hull entirely to allow for primer and bottom paint on the bottom and new gelcoat on the topsides. Two areas of wet deck on the cabin house would also be addressed. Stripping allowed for some fairing and revealed the original hull striping.

Bottom
Once stripped and faired, the bottom was taped off. Multiple coats of primer were sprayed on to allow for more fairing. The primer was sanded, incorporating the final fairing. Bottom paint was sprayed on and, later, wet sanded to give a race ready finish.
The final result of fairing, priming and paint on the keel.

Topsides
The areas that would become the stripes were taped off. Orange gelcoat was sprayed. The tape was removed revealing the stripes. White gelcoat was sprayed over the entire topsides, stripes included.
Sanding the white gelcoat also reveals the stripes again. After the first round of sanding the boat starts to look like the final product. After sanding and initial buffing. The orange stripes are inlaid in the white creating a flush finish. After final polishing the boat looks as good, if not better, than when it left the factory 30 or so years ago.

Cabin Top
The cabin top was opened up, the wet core removed, new core placed in and the area glassed over. After fairing the area was painted. Matching the no-skid would be impossible and unnecessary.
